National Tree Day

On Friday 9th October Miss Finnerty and her class went to the Iveagh Gardens to learn about trees as part of National Tree Day.

It was a lovely sunny day and we walked from school all the way there. The city was busy and we enjoyed the journey.

When we arrived we met Donal, the gardener, who took us on a tour of the park. We learned to identify trees such as oak, horse chestnut, holly, birch, beech, and elder. Each tree had a different shaped leaf. We collected conkers/horsechestnuts, acorns, berries and had a great time learning outside in the sunshine and fresh air.

When we got back to school we did some leaf rubbings with the leaves. We put the leaves and berries on our nature table.

1916 and Us

In preparation for the 1916 centenary next year, 3rd and 4th class are learning re the events of the 1916 Easter Rising. We are learning the Irish National Anthem – Amhrán na bhFiann and we are reading a supplement from the Irish Independent called Children of the Revolution. It is very interesting as it mentions lots of places and street names close to our school. We hope to go on a local walk in the near future to visit these places of interest, such as the G.P.O., Moore Street and the Four Courts.

Maths Week in 1st

We had lots of fun learning about Maths during Maths Week. On Friday some parents came in to play Maths Games with us. We had lots of fun! We answered maths riddles everyday. We also made 3d structures using cocktail sticks and playdough. We visited the Junior Maths board and entered the Maths Eye competition. We had a fun week.
